During the 1920’s & 30’s, the earlier years of Joseph Pilates studio, the clientele was primarily male. As a boxer, Joseph attracted men like himself. All exercises that Joseph Pilates created were based on his own male body to improve his physique to gain strength and flexibility.

A Finess Regimen

Pilates was designed to be a universal fitness regimen that can benefit the healthy and the injured, the young and the old, and of course men and women. Given the specific biomechanics and physical needs, many doctors and sport coaches would tend to agree men need Pilates more than women. Whether it be T-ball or soccer boys typically start in sports earlier than girls. Poor training practices at a young age rarely allow boys to properly develop core strength and correct exercise habits.

The Core Connection

Over time lower abdominal weaknesses and over aggressive weight lifting routines can follow a boy into adulthood through such symptoms as back pain, instability, unbalanced muscle development, inflexibility, especially in the hamstrings. For all the time men spend developing their six-pack, they often do not understand the fundamental connection between the core and their extremities. They just don’t use their transversus abdomnis properly. It is the critical muscle for supporting movement in the trunk and shoulders and well as the lower body.

So men Pilates is not just for women – take Pilates and develop a stronger core, gain more flexibility, move with more fluidity, improve your endurance and balance, learn to find your center and initiate all movements from there and feel the difference it can make in your life.
